The fall season is mostly thought of as a time when green things turn orange and red and eventually fall off their plant stems to make way for winter’s bare twigs. It is not often thought of as a time of blooming, but there are some plants that flower and bloom and create glorious color through the fall. If you are looking for some great plants to bring some eye-catching beauty to your landscape design, check out these.

      What Plants Bloom in Fall?

      The Cannalily

The Cannalilly flower brings a burst of vibrant, fiery red with a beautiful lily shape. It blooms beginning in the late summer and into the fall until the very first frost of winter arrives, has gorgeous chocolate colored banana leaves, and brings a touch of tropical interest to a fall landscape.

      African Daisy

These daisies are sometimes also called blue-eyed daisies from their striking, colorful center. They love to bloom in the late summer when there is plenty of hot sunshine and continue to bloom into the fall.

      Helenium

The Helenium is a bright orange-yellow flower perfect for those cottage-style gardens that have that wildflower meadowfield look. It loves full sun and is a favorite of butterflies.

      Japanese Anemone

These flowers have beautiful, white and pink petals with small blooms. They love light to partial shade and prefer a rich soil full of organic matter.

      Hardy Fuchsia

The hardy fuchsia plant is, of course, bright, vibrant, and pink. You will enjoy the two-toned rich color that brings so much interest to your yard during the fall season. It is good to know that they do not love to be too wet, too dry, or too hot.

      Cosmos

The Cosmo flower is very similar to a daisy with a beautiful pink color. They loved to produce blooms from summer into the fall and are great for attracting bees, butterflies, and even a few birds.

      Sumac

The sumac flower is more than just a beautiful red wine colored bloom. This is also great to use the dried ground berries for adding a layer of interest to your savory dishes. It gives a sour lemon flavor. Some blooms can grow up to 30 feet tall.

      Goldenrod

Goldenrod helps to bring some of that deep yellow hue that we love so much in the fall. It is good to know that this flower is sometimes considered a weed, as it is easily multiplied in a landscape. It likes sunny and partially shady places in average to dry soil. It may be best in a planter if you are not willing to give it a little bit of attention, so that it does not overtake the area.

      Sunflower

The sunflower is a widely known and popular fall plant. It may be the most popular of fall flowers besides the mum. These flowers grow large and tall and come in a wide range of colors. The yellow is the most popular, but there are several amazing, different shades of sunflowers. A sunflower is a great addition when you want to bring some dramatic blooms to your landscape and some height.

      Chrysanthemum

The chrysanthemum is often referred to as just a mum. These are another popular flower, often kept in planters near people’s doors in the fall. This flower comes in every shade of the rainbow, yet the most popular are those deep fall hues of wine, red, orange, gold, and yellow.

These are just a few of the many plants that produce blooming flowers during the fall. To know what plants will work best in your particular landscape and discover a new favorite gorgeous plant to bring some interest in life to your landscape from fall and even into the first frost of the year, it is a great idea to talk things over with an experienced landscape designer.
